Our History

Established in 1854 during the British colonial era, Central Prison Peshawar stands as one of the oldest and most historically significant correctional facilities in the region. Purpose-built to serve as the principal jail of the then North-West Frontier Province, it was designed according to the penal philosophies of the time—focusing on confinement, discipline, and deterrence.

Originally constructed with a capacity for 450 prisoners, the prison has undergone multiple phases of structural and administrative expansion. Today, it serves as a model high-security prison with a capacity exceeding 3,000 inmates, incorporating modern correctional practices and rehabilitation frameworks.
