Central Prison Peshawar has undergone significant modernization and rehabilitation efforts to support inmate welfare and reintegration into society. Vocational training programs—including computer literacy, leatherwork, footwear embroidery, tailoring, and small industries like chappal and wallet making—equip inmates with marketable skills; in late 2024, it even held its first-ever graduation ceremony for 43 prisoners completing a six-month training program. Sports and physical wellness are prioritized through an open-air gym and courts for volleyball, badminton, table tennis, and snooker. Health care is comprehensive, featuring an on-site hospital, weekly specialist visits, dispensaries, ambulance services, and blood screenings for Hepatitis B and C. Technological upgrades include a computerized Prison Management Information System, CCTV coverage, court-linked digital documentation (including photos and fingerprints), and an online hearing facility that eliminates the need for physical prisoner transfers. Administrative and legal support is strengthened by increased budgets for quality food, free legal aid, grievance redressal systems, and collaboration with private-sector stakeholders to open market access to prison-made products. Altogether, Central Prison Peshawar reflects a progressive shift from punitive confinement to a rehabilitative, humane model focused on skill-building, well‑being, and social reintegration. #444141

Health

Health Care

Central Prison Peshawar provides basic health facilities through its on-site prison hospital, which includes separate wards for male and female inmates, a laboratory, and weekly visits by specialist doctors. Inmates with serious conditions are referred to major hospitals in Peshawar. Despite these efforts, overcrowding and limited medical staff often lead to challenges in managing infectious diseases like HIV, hepatitis, and tuberculosis. Regular health screenings are conducted, and special measures are taken for inmates requiring isolation or treatment.

Qarshi dispensaries

The Qarshi Foundation has established a herbal dispensary within Central Prison Peshawar, offering inmates free medical check-ups and natural remedies under the care of qualified tabeebs (physician- herbalists). The dispensary was officially inspected by local authorities when the Assistant Commissioner toured the prison in November 2022, and the jail administration was urged to ensure that traditional treatments and healthcare services remain consistently available to all prisoners

drug Rehab center

Central Prison Peshawar has introduced a drug rehabilitation center tailored for female and juvenile inmates, supported by the Pakistan Human Development Organization (PHDO). The program offers medical assistance, counseling, and reintegration support, aiming to help drug-dependent prisoners overcome addiction and prepare for life after release . Established as part of a broader Khyber Pakhtunkhwa initiative, this center is equipped with trained staff and designed to address not only substance abuse but also the social and psychological needs of inmates.

Vocational Training

Computer

Central Prison Peshawar offers computer courses as part of its rehabilitation and skill development programs. Inmates are trained in basic computer operations, typing, and software applications like Microsoft Office. These courses aim to enhance digital literacy and prepare prisoners for better employment opportunities after their release.

tailoring

Tailoring is one of the key vocational training programs offered at Central Prison Peshawar. Inmates are taught stitching, cutting, and designing skills, enabling them to produce various garments. This initiative not only helps in rehabilitation but also equips prisoners with practical skills for earning a livelihood after their release.

Skill Development

The Skill Development Program at Central Prison Peshawar is designed to rehabilitate inmates by equipping them with practical and vocational skills. Through training in areas like tailoring, computing, carpentry, and handicrafts, prisoners gain valuable experience that can help them build a better future and reintegrate into society as productive citizens.

Other Services

Liabrary

The library at Central Prison Peshawar serves as an essential resource for inmate rehabilitation and education. Stocked with a range of books — from basic literacy and religious texts to vocational manuals, current affairs, and literature — it encourages reading, self-study, and personal development. Access to this quiet, structured environment supports improved literacy, critical thinking, and a healthier use of free time, further aiding prisoners in their journey toward successful reintegration.

Water Filteration

Central Prison Peshawar now benefits from an upgraded water filtration plant, installed as part of a broader infrastructure overhaul under the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government’s prison reforms. This plant ensures inmates have access to safe, potable drinking water, directly addressing previous concerns raised by judicial visits over hepatitis and waterborne diseases—issues linked to contaminated drinking sources

Video Link

Central Prison Peshawar has introduced a video link facility to modernize its judicial and family communication systems. Inmates can now appear in court remotely—eliminating the need for transport, reducing security risks, and saving on escort costs . In addition, the facility enables virtual family visits, helping maintain crucial emotional bonds while ensuring safety and convenience . This dual-purpose service not only streamlines judicial procedures but also supports inmate well-being and rehabilitation.

E-visit

The e‑Visit facility—launched at Central Prison Peshawar in January 2025—allows inmates and their families to connect via video calls using a dedicated E‑Visit app overseen by the KPITB and integrated into the province-wide Prison Management Information System (PMIS) . This system enables scheduled, secure virtual visits from home, reducing the need for in-person travel and enhancing emotional support, while facilitating judicial access through remote court hearings . Monitored by prison authorities, the service ensures safety and compliance, and supports rehabilitation by strengthening family bonds and streamlining logistics across KP’s 39 prisons .

PCO

Central Prison Peshawar has implemented a Public Call Office (PCO) system to offer inmates a safe, monitored way to communicate with their families and legal counsel. The automated setup allows prisoners to register up to five approved phone numbers and make audio (and in some cases video) calls—typically twice a week for a total of 60 to 80 minutes—with all conversations logged and overseen by prison staff. Calls occur during designated hours (generally weekdays, morning to late afternoon), and access can be suspended for security reasons or misconduct. This service not only reduces illegal cellphone use but also supports inmate well-being by maintaining vital family and legal connection in a controlled environment.

Special meal

Central Prison Peshawar ensures that inmates receive a balanced diet to maintain their health and well-being. Meals are prepared under hygienic conditions and include essential nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, and minerals. The daily menu typically consists of chapati, lentils, vegetables, and seasonal fruits. In addition, special meals are provided to inmates with specific medical conditions, dietary needs, or during religious occasions. These special diets are prepared under the supervision of medical staff to meet nutritional requirements and support overall health.
